ITALIA ‘90 had Nessun Dorma, Euro ‘96 had Three Lions. Now, thanks to a group of film students in Newport, the city's premiere sporting event, the Ryder Cup, has its own song.

Three documentary filmmakers at the University of Wales, Newport, were given a brief to make a 10-minute piece about Newport.

Second year students Jonathan Lawrance, 26, Merlyn Phillips, 21, and Sam Smith-Higgins, 39, put their heads together and thought the tournament which will bring golf's finest to Newport did not have its own anthem, so set out to rectify the situation.

With that in mind, they decided they would try and land one of Newport's best-known musical exports to write a song, Goldie Lookin' Chain.

They contacted the group who penned the lyrics to ‘Golf is Coming’ within a week.

The students asked Goldie Lookin' Chain if they could ask the City of Newport Male Choir to sing the chorus, so they took the CD to the 40-strong choir and were met with more than one sceptical look when they first heard it, but after the second play, they had the choir singing along and they agreed to get on board.

On Monday, the two contrasting vocalists packed themselves into a recording studio at the university to record the song, with the students filming the journey of the song for their project under the title of ‘You Knows Golf is Coming’.

‘Golf is Coming’ will be released in the month prior to the Ryder Cup and the students will also film a music video to accompany it.

Mrs Smith-Higgins said: "The ideal outcome would be for the people of Newport to get behind this anthem and embrace it so when the European and US golfers come here, everybody is singing this song which sums up what the average man thinks about the Ryder Cup. It's by the people of Newport for the people of Newport."
