MORE than 1,000 rowers gathered on the river banks at Monmouth this weekend to take part in the annual Monmouth Regatta.
The two-day event on Saturday and Sunday saw 462 crews from 48 clubs around the UK compete in almost 200 boat races, with events held every three minutes from 9am on Saturday.
The regatta, which was first established in 1872, also included a special race in memory of former Monmouth School teacher Phil Mathew, who organised the event for more than two decades.
It is now thought to be the largest rowing regatta in Wales.
Regatta chairman John Griffiths said: "It's been another good year. We've had around 1,000 competitors taking part and a record number of crews, so the river banks have been pretty full. The rowing is good as ever, and the weather turned out to be great towards the end of the weekend."
