CHARLOTTE Roe and Elizabeth Parker are mums with a fundraising mission.

The pair, from Rhiwderin and St Julians, Newport, respectively, are trying to raise £3,250 each for a leading disability charity, their ultimate challenge being to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, next January.

Inspiration comes in Mrs Roe's case from her three-year-old niece and for Mrs Parker from a friend, both of whom have cerebral palsy.

Scope is the UK's leading charity offering support to people with the condition, and their families.

"We've seen first hand the work Scope does for people and we want to do something to support its work," said Mrs Roe.

Next January will see Mrs Roe, 32, and Mrs Parker, 37, take a 10-day, Scope-organised trip to Tanzania, during which they aim to reach the summit at more than 19,000 feet.

Getting fit to meet the physical demands, particularly those set by the altitude, must be fitted in around the demands of family, work, and fundraising.

The pair have organised a range of events, most recently a sponsored walk at Glasllwch primary school and a non-uniform day at Pentrepoeth primary school, both of which raised more than £300.

"Both schools have been very helpful and generous, and it gives us a boost when we are planning other fundraising events," said Mrs Roe.
