EVAN Whitehouse is being hailed a hero after helping his friend who was knocked unconscious by a biking accident.

The 11-year-old Undy Primary School pupil was recognised for his intuitive actions in helping pal Nathan Brown with a special bravery award this week.

The boys were playing on their bikes with friends on wasteland near their school on April 27 when Nathan mounted a ramp, made from a mound of dirt, and fell from his bike hitting his head.

He was unconscious for around ten minutes and Evan stayed with him, making sure he was breathing, pinching his cheeks and talking to him until he regained consciousness, before helping to walk him to the school where he knew there would be adults to help.

Nathan was taken to Newport’s Royal Gwent Hospital where he was treated for concussion overnight and allowed home the next day.

Both boys had been wearing cycling helmets and taken their National Safe Cycling Proficiency test.

Nathan’s mum Sian Brown said: “I am so thankful to Evan for staying with Nathan and making sure he was safe, he is a very good friend.”

The school’s chair of governors Tom Wall, who coaches the school rugby team Evan plays scrum-half for, said: “It was not a surprise to me that Evan behaved in such a way.

“He is fiercely loyal to his friends and is a shining example of what a young man should be.”

Evan received a special bravery award from the Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations at a special school assembly on Tuesday.
