THE streets of Newport were awash with colour at the weekend as 6,500 people poured onto the streets to celebrate the annual Maindee Festival.

Now in its 15th year, the cultural celebration took over the roads surrounding Rodney Parade on Saturday with a parade featuring around 500 people.

The festival's success had been called into question on Friday when organisers revealed they were 30 volunteers short of what was needed to keep the floats, banners and sculptures moving.

But an appeal in the Argus saw 15 helpers come forward on Friday, with more turning up on the day.

The parade left the rugby ground at 12pm, travelling along Corporation Road, Harrow Road, Rugby Road and Eton Road before making its way back into the grounds of Maindee Primary School where the festival continued until 7pm.

Liz Price, 27, of Marlborough Road enjoyed the sights with her daughter Eva, three.

She said: "I was one of the people leading the carnival 15 years ago and I've been coming ever since. It's better than last year and you can tell they've spent more money."

The theme of this year was Water is Life and a giant pair of wellington boots was just one of the huge creations dominating the parade.

There was also live music on the stage by the likes of Maindee School Choir and Impact Allstars, as well as performances from breakdancers, DJs and martial artists.
