THE rain failed to dampen the spirits of thousands of people who turned out to the National Eisteddfod in Ebbw Vale yesterday.

Torrential rain during the morning made for soggy conditions on the Maes as people came from all over the country to compete and watch other perform at Wales’ biggest cultural show.

Among those getting in on the displays was Gwent-based Valleys Gymnastics Academy.

Dozens of youngsters from the area donned brightly-coloured costumes to put on an array of dance routines and gymnastic moves.

Youngsters Ellan Gibbons and Liberty Pennington from Ebbw Vale and Emily Penson from Wattsville were just some of those strutting their stuff.

Two spectators who stuck it out at the gymnastics display despite the pouring rain were Jill Peck and Sonia Gould, both from Tredegar.

The pair were watching Mrs Peck’s grandson Kieran perform at part of the VGA team.

Mrs Peck said yesterday: “Despite the rain, we are still having a great time. It’s a marvellous event to be held in Ebbw Vale.”

Mrs Gould added: “There is a great atmosphere here and it’s good to come and see it.”

Elsewhere on the Maes, Caerphilly councillor and tireless Gwent political campaigner Ray Davies was in full song as part of the Wales Socialist Choir, who were attracting a lot of attention from passers-by.
