SHOPPERS in Newport will be asked to consider swapping high street brands for recycled furniture and vintage clothes at a temporary store set up as part of the Empty Shops Project.

Local vintage expert Sara Crerar has teamed up with SuperDragon artist Marion Webber to give unwanted accessories and furniture a new lease of life at their two-week ‘pop-up shop’ called Glas in Upper Dock Street next month.

Ms Webber, 40, who runs Newport based Graphic Design company Webber Design, said: “These days many of us are addicted to fast, cheap, throwaway fashion and I’m not saying that we’re not partial to it - yet by restoring old leather accessories, furniture and textiles, we can turn something ready for the tip into something useful whilst at the same time celebrating the unique.”

The pair hope the venture will make people rethink the way they shop and consume mass produced products and encourage them to support local charity shops and independent traders.

And if your keen to learn a few tricks of the trade, the women are welcoming people to take part in workshops in felt-making and painting.

For more information visit the shop between 10 and 4pm from September 7 to 17.

The Empty Shops Project is a community programme, which aims to bring vacant shops back into use and engage the public through art.
