THREE people arrested following an incident which started minutes after Pill Carnival ended have been charged, police said yesterday.

A 16-year-old from Newport who was arrested on suspicion of affray following the disorder at Pill Millennium Fields on Monday night was charged with assault.

A man, aged 22, and a 17-year-old teen arrested on suspicion of violent disorder have also been charged.

All three will appear at magistrates courts in the coming weeks along with two other men who were charged under the Public Order Act on Tuesday.

A second 16-year-old from Newport arrested under the Public Order Act will receive a final warning and a 15-year-old arrested under the Public Order Act was given a reprimand.

The incident, which saw police officers come under attack from a mob of around 60 people and resulted in one officer’s hand being broken, erupted around 9.20pm when police stepped in to help a woman who was being attacked.

The trouble escalated and 30 extra officers, some armed with tasers, had to be called in to control the hostile crowd.

Pill Millennium Centre trust manager Richard Thomas said the fields were still in a bad state following the brawl with rubbish and broken glass scattered around.

He said although carnival organisers ran a bar they only sold alcohol in plastic glasses, and said any glass bottles or glasses must have been brought onto the site by carnival-goers.

Mr Thomas said although volunteers had tried to clean up some of the mess, staff at the centre had to give first aid to a seven-year-old girl who cut her foot on glass outside the centre on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for the council said carnival organisers were responsible for clearing up after the event.

She added council staff visited the fields yesterday and while they were satisfied the majority of the work had been carried out they would return today to complete any outstanding work.
