PLANS for a Newport neighbourhood to hosts its first food festival are under way.

Pill is to host an international festival next month to promote local businesses and bring the community together.

There will be 50 stalls selling foods from across the globe, including India, China and Jamaica, and a screen showing live action from the final day of the Ryder Cup golf tournament.

Music, dancing and cookery demonstrations will take place on a stage and activities for children will include a bouncy castle, roller hockey sessions with the Cardiff Devils, a climbing wall and a golf simulator.

The event is being organised by Pill Communities First, which aims to pass organisation on to local residents who they hope will repeat the festival monthly or annually in the future.

Stalls are free for local community events and cost £25 for businesses - with the money being invested into a fund for future festivals.

Organiser Lindsey Humphrey said: “The main aim of the project is to improve and promote businesses in Pill and with that improve quality of life in the area.”

Entry to the festival, which takes place from 10am until 5pm on October 3 in Commercial Road, will be free.

The street will be closed to traffic for the day and Change For Life will be providing many of the children’s fun activities.

Weekly meetings are currently being held at Pill’s Communities First office in Temple Street on Wednesdaysfor anyone who wants to get involved.
