ONE Newport school ensured the Ryder Cup legacy lives on in the city by building a golf course within its grounds.
Pupils at St Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Primary School are having after-school lessons on a nine-hole mini course built on the school’s field.
The school gained funding from Golf Development Wales to set up the course, at which pupils use miniature clubs and are taught by specially-trained teaching assistant Hayley Penn.
Pupils became enthused by golf when they were taught the Ryder Cup curriculum, which involved golf-related activities and challenges, earlier this term.
Teaching assistant Sue Smith said: “The children love using the course, especially the girls, and we’ve got a waiting list for the after-school club.”
She said golf may also be taught in some PE lessons next summer.
St Andrew’s Primary School is due to launch its own course soon and 14 other Newport primary schools have set up golf clubs since the tournament, held at the Celtic Manor, finished.
