AN ABERGAVENNY man, who helped oversee the refurbishment of a Monmouth theatre, admitted possessing more than 2,700 indecent images of children on Friday.

Victor Bignell, 73, of Norton Skenfrith, appeared in Newport Crown Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to two counts of distributing indecent images of children, one count of possessing indecent images of children to show and nine counts of making indecent images of children.

He also pleaded guilty to one count of possessing a total of 2,276 indecent images of children and and two counts relating to the possesion of a total of 858 extreme pornographic images.

The offences took place between April 2002 and October 2010.

Bignell is also charged with a further five counts of making indecent images of children, but no pleas were entered to those counts, which will be resolved at a future hearing.

Bignell is the former director of the Savoy Theatre Trust, who helped to oversee the refurbishment of the Monmouth threatre in 2004.

Judge Rhys Rowlands released Bignell on bail while a pre-sentence report is compiled. Bignell will be sentenced next month.
