A HUNDRED and ten agency and short-term fixed contract staff at a Newport steelworks were praised for their hard work as their employment came to an end.

The workers at Tata Steel in Llanwern were taken on in December following a fire at the Tata Steel site in Ijmuiden, Holland, to handle the Dutch orders.

Now the Ijmuiden site is back up and running, there is no longer demand for the workers.

Around 120 agency and short-term fixed contract staff were taken on originally.

More than 600 permanent manufacturing employees remain at the site.

Director Jon Ferriman said: “I would like to thank all of those people who have been working with us for the last nine months.

“Their hard work and dedication has been fantastic, and they have certainly helped Tata Steel in Europe overcome a very difficult situation, and maintain a good supply to our customers.”

Robert Edwards from the steelworkers’ union Community said it was hoped that other employment would be found for the workers, but this had not been possible in the current market.
