Humble Boy, is the directorial debut of Kevin Meyers for Newport Playgoers. The play starts off as what seems to be a light hearted comedy, but gradually unravels itself into the dark turmoil surrounding the productions central character Felix, and while Myers brilliant creative vision was delightfully unveiled before us on stage. We as the audience were impressively introduced to the play with visual effects projected on to the stages back cloth. The set was admirable and reflected that of the perfect ³country garden² which we all know and love. This of course coincided with the plays opening music composition by the plays director.

As the audience relaxed into the play, we were introduced to the many hidden depths of Felix, where in some parts throughout, lighting and sound effects were cleverly used to reflect this key characters torment successfully played by Chris Powell. Rosemary Bissex, delightfully shone as Felix¹s mother Flora. With many a dialogue between the two characters consistently showing mother and son conflict.

From start to finish, the play was a joy to watch with plenty of naturally funny moments, divulged to us by the plays supporting cast. George, played by Lyndon House gave us classic comic timing, as well as Sue Morgan¹s, Mercy giving us touching and moving moments a long with Hugh Moelyn Hughes as Jim and Rhian Mitchell was a joy to watch as Rosie.

Humble Boy is on at the Dolman Theatre in Newport every night this week at 7.15 pm till Saturday, with also a Saturday Matinee at 2.30pm .
