HUNDREDS of people lined the streets of Chepstow today as the 1 Rifles were granted the Freedom of the Town.

Soldiers from the battallion, based at Beachley Barracks, marched through the streets, on a day when they will receive their Operational Medals for service in Afghanistan.

Following the Freedom ceremony at Chepstow castle, 500 Riflemen marched from Regents Way, under the town arch, before making an eyes left to the town dignitaries and guests waiting at the Cenotaph.

The parade was lead by Headquarters, who left Regent Way at 11.15am, followed by A, B, and C Company.

Following the parade, the town mayor, Cllr Henry Hodges, said: "It has been a magnificent day. It has been a great honour, not only for the soldiers and their families, but for the town as well."

Speaking on behalf of the Battalion 1 Rifles, Lt Col. James De Labilliere said: "It is hugely important to us to receive the support of the people at home. Coming back after a long summer in Helmand province to this honour means so much to us."
