THREE Valleys men appeared in court charged with kidnapping an Abergavenny man.

Phillip Davies, 26, of Gwent Terrace, Malcom Davies, 28, of Attlee Road, both Ebbw Vale, and Jonathan Powell, 22, of Park Street, Blaina, appeared in Newport Crown Court on Friday where they pleaded not guilty to kidnapping Shane Thomas on October 14 this year.

Malcom Davies and Powell also pleaded not guilty to possessing two hammers, a baseball bat and a machete in St Andrews Crescent, Abergavenny, on the same date.

Phillip Davies pleaded guilty to possessing a hammer on the basis it was for self-defence.

All three pleaded not guilty to assaulting Mr Thomas occasioning actual bodily harm and Powell pleaded not guilty to a further charge of common assault.

Prosecutor Mike Hammett said Phillip Davies' guilty plea was not acceptable to the crown and asked for all the charges to be set out for trial.

Judge Eleri Rees set a trial date for April 10 and remanded all three in custody until then.
