A CALDICOT sailor was commended for his contribution to training Royal Navy new recruits.
Warfare Specialist Kelvin Miles, 29, received the commendation from his commanding officer for his work in teaching new recruits at HMS Raleigh – the Royal Navy training establishment in Cornwall, where WS Miles is currently assigned.
WS Miles joined the Royal Navy in 2000 and has served on three warships: the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal and frigates HMS Cornwall and HMS Campbeltown.
He received an operational service medal in recognition of his role onboard HMS Cornwall during a deployment to the Gulf.
His current role sees him teaching new recruits navigation and boat-handling skills during the seamanship phase of their ten-week initial naval training course. WS Miles is one of the first of his rank to undertake a teaching role.
The former Caerleon Comprehensive pupil, who lives with his wife Samantha and 18-month-old son Matthew, said: “Since joining the Royal Navy, I have been on numerous deployments and carried out many different roles. Working at the Sea Sense training centre, teaching new recruits, is very challenging and rewarding.”
