CAERPHILLY and Monmouthshire topped the table when it comes to recycling in Gwent – recycling or composting more than half its waste.

Latest figures from the Welsh Assembly show that between July and September 2011, Caerphilly council reused, recycled or composted 53 per cent of its domestic and commercial waste, while Monmouthshire managed 52 per cent.

Newport was the third highest council in Gwent reaching 45 per cent, while Torfaen managed 43 per cent.

Blaenau Gwent recycled 38 per cent of waste. Councils were given a recycling target of 40 per cent to reach by 2009/10 but a stringent 52 per cent statutory target was set by the Assembly for 2012/13.

All councils could face fines of £200 per tonne if they do not meet this target.
