THE family of an Abertillery man who died aged just 34 is setting up a trust in his memory.

Former Argus graphic designer Simon Fowler died in October last year after complications arising from his diabetes.

Mr Fowler died within 24 hours of being taken to hospital, just four months after he married his girlfriend of six years Nichola Begg.

600 people attended his funeral and donations of more than £1,300 were made in lieu of flowers to Diabetes UK and now his family and friends have vowed to raise thousands of pounds for the charity in his memory.

A keen Wales rugby fan and Everton supporter, Mr Fowler, who also worked at Westdale Press, Cardiff, was a well known person with a huge personality and a huge heart.

His brother Matthew Fowler said: "The reason we want to set up a fund is a way of remembering Simon.

"He was a right character and was loved by everyone who met him and so we thought this would be a good way of remembering him.

Widow Mrs Fowler described her husband, who popped the question while on holiday in Paris, added: "He was always the life and soul of the party, always up for a laugh and a good time."

The couple tied the knot at Peterstone Court, Brecon in June and enjoyed just four short months together as husband and wife before he died.

"Since his death, everyone has been so supportive. People are still leaving tributes on his Facebook page everyday. The support of our family and friends has got me through it," said Mrs Fowler, 30.

25 of Mr Fowler's closest friends and family, including his wife, brother, sister in Law and best friend Jamie Brown are taking part in this year's Cardiff Half Marathon, as well as holding a fundraising concert at the Pendragon, Abertillery on Friday, March 3.

The night will include a Stereophonics tribute act Monophonics, as well as an auction of sports memorabilia including signed Everton, Dragons and Cardiff blues items and a raffle.
