HOMES in Trevethin, which were gutted when a fire ripped through them may have to be demolished.

Three families were displaced after the accidentally-started blaze took hold on January 19.

Since then, the families have been staying with friends and family as Bron Afon community housing officials assess the extent of damage.

Project manager Jonathan Hyde said he is still waiting for a report on the safety of the structures, but added: "Loss adjusters have visited the site to assess the scope of work needed to demolish those homes which have been severely fire damaged."

It is not known how many of the three properties will need to be demolished, but Bron Afon has put a security guard on site to ensure any salvageable items aren’t taken.

While Bron Afon said it will find all affected families alternative homes, it is believed Natalie and Marcus Rowlands are temporarily staying at Pontypool Travelodge and Pauline Jones and son Cody, 15 are with relatives.

Neighbour John Pearce, 49 and son Ryan, 14 are staying with Mr Pearce’s girlfriend in Blackwood and his daughter Gemma, 18 is with relatives.

Locals are hoping to collect over £1,000 for the families when fundraising is completed.

They have also donated items such as fridges, freezers, televisions, irons, hoovers, wardrobes, beds and clothes for them at the Cold Barn Farm community centre.
