BACK in the 1980s they were photographed for a Newport university documentary photography project.

Now after spotting themselves in pictures printed in the Argus, they’re among a number of people being asked by the University of Wales, Newport, to help celebrate the centenary year of photography being taught in the city.

Michael Weedall, 39, of Pontypool, and Donna Jones, 38, of Bettws, are among those who were photographed in the 1980s for Newport Survey, a project which saw documentary photography students at the university capture life in the city during the 80s.

Last month we reprinted a selection of the photographs calling for people who recognised themselves to come forward.

MrWeedall was among those after recognising himself as a ten-year-old boy in a picture at Baneswell Social Club in the early 1980s.

He said: “I remember that day well as we’d been for a trip to Cwmcarn Forest Drive with the Baneswell Community Centre playscheme.

“Travelling back, the minibus we were in was involved in an accident.

“No-one was hurt but we were all late back and I remember our parents saying we had to go to a party.

“I think it was some kind of talent show.”

MrWeedall, who now lives with his partner Jayne Lewis, son Ben, 17 and daughter Rebecca, seven, said: “It was a real community back then.

“We would have street parties and carnivals in the summer. They were cracking days”

Ms Jones, (nee Evans) who lives with partner Karl Jones and children Claire 18 and Emma,14, spotted herself in a picture taken at St David Lewis Roman Catholic School, Bettws, playing chess with her friends and Sister St Joseph.

She said: “I think it was a competition or we were practising for a competition.

I still play now and again.”
