A NEW project which aims to help the huge number of socially isolated people living in Torfaen was launched last month.

Work by Age Concern Torfaen found that there are many of people who are cut off from others, have no-one to talk to and are at risk of suffering from loneliness and depression.

It launched the Friends for Life befriending project with Torfaen Mind and Crossroads Care south east Wales, which has already helped more than 100 people.

The Big Lottery-funded initiative has seen community hubs set up where older people can talk about things like health, interests, news and the weather.

Its aim is to help people who have perhaps been unwell or lost their independence start socialising again.

A lunch and bingo club takes place on Mondays at Oakfield Community Centre, with games and activities at Pontnewynydd Community Centre.

On Tuesdays there is a lunch club and IT class at Ponthir Village Hall and on Wednesdays there’s a book exchange and introduction to IT at Broad Street, Abersychan.
