A MAN suffered head injuries following an attack in Newport, police said yesterday.

Officers said two 18-year-old local men were arrested on suspicion of assault and affray following the incident, which happened at 9.55pm on Friday in Rogerstone.

They have been bailed pending further inquiries.

A family friend of the 49-yearold injured man said he spent the night at the Royal Gwent Hospital, where he was treated for cuts and bruises and had to have stitches to his arms. He was discharged on Saturday.

The woman said the couple, who are too afraid to be named, were faced with a barrage of abuse when they answered a knock at their door.

She claims the man was punched and kicked to the ground, became unconscious and a vodka bottle was smashed over his head.

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said they could not confirm if weapons were used and said inquiries are ongoing.

Call the force on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
