AN ANCIENT Yew Tree, which came crashing down during strong winds earlier this month, cannot be saved.

The tree, believed to be up to 1,000 years old, stood in the grounds of St Faith's Church, Llanfoist, near Abergavenny until storms sent two-thirds of it crashing down onto the footpath and headstones, narrowly missing the church.

Days later nearby residents witnessed the remaining part of the tree fall to the ground.

Parishioners fears the majority of the tree, which is listed, could not be saved were realised after a tree surgeon assessed the damage.

Church warden, Wendy Pendry, of Kiln Road, said: "Unfortunately he had to take away the remainder of the tree but the base is left which could re-grow in years to come."

"We are keeping a piece of the tree as a memory and hope to use it as a picnic seat in the churchyard," she added.
