GWENT police are to carry out an investigation into the case of a Newport man who died in custody.
The 22-year-old man was reported missing from his Newport home on Saturday. After a search of the area by officers he was arrested for his own safety under the Mental Health Act.
A police spokesman said he was taken into custody on Saturday evening but was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport on Sunday morning after officers became concerned about his health. He died while receiving treatment.
The Gwent Police investigation will be under the direction of an independent police watchdog.
