THE protection of Twmbarlwm and its ancient hill fort is up for discussion at a public meeting in Cross Keys tonight – and organisers are urging all interested parties to attend.

Maintenance work on the hill fort, a scheduled ancient monument, and a new public car park are among imminent projects.

But Cymdeithas Twmbarlwm, the Twmbarlwm Society, is warning that more needs to be done to protect and conserve the site and the surrounding landscape.

The society was set up in 2010 with just that aim, and founder and chairman Rob Southall warned: “Our landscape and history are under threat. We must address this issue now, as it may be our last chance to protect a national treasure before it is lost forever.”

He cites erosion and illegal off-road biking as major threats, with the latter in particular also applying to the summit of neighbouring Mynydd Maen, which will also be covered at the meeting.

The meeting is being presented in conjunction with Caerphilly and Torfaen councils, Gwent Police and the Ancient Cwmbran Society, and will be held at Cross Keys RFC, Pandy Park, 7pm to 9.30pm.

Council presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and question and answer session.
