A GWENT mother, who escaped with minor injuries when a landslip wrote off her car, is demanding assurances that the road is safe.

June Showler was driving along Sirhowy Enterprise Way, Blackwood, in torrential rain on Sunday night when the bank gave way and mud started sliding towards her. It hit her Peugeot 206 and a vehicle collided with her. Her car is a write-off.

Mrs Showler was travelling with her daughter Catherine Parton,16, and Catherine's boyfriend Adam Bailey, 19, when the accident happened.

"I can't help but think we're lucky to be alive," said the 45-year-old. "It's frightening to even think about it."

Mrs Showler was taken from the wreckage on a stretcher, and treated at the Royal Gwent Hospital suffering from whiplash and bruising. Catherine was also taken to hospital after suffering a bump to the head and all three were treated for shock.

Mrs Showler, of Priors Gate, Oakdale, now wants answers as to how the landslip happened, and an assurance from the Sirhowy Enterprise Way Ltd, which manages the road, to ensure such an incident is never repeated.

"I travel along the road all the time," she said.

"What if it happened when the road was very busy? It could have been disastrous."

Now recovering at home, Mrs Showler praised the efforts of motorists and emergency services.

"A man, whom I think was called Mark, was first on the scene.

He was a trained first-aider and looked after us until the emergency services turned up.

"Everyone was brilliant, the firefighters and the paramedics were fantastic, and I can't thank them all enough.

"I didn't see the damage to my car as it was dark, but it's been declared a write-off."
