VOLUNTEERS collected more than a tonne of rubbish from woods on a Newport housing estate.
Members of the local partnership board braved the wind and rain to carry out the clean up on the Bettws estate.
They were joined by Tredegar Park councillor Trevor Watkins and Duffryn ward police constable Darren Morgan.
Bob Barry, of Duffryn Community Link, said they were "surprised and disappointed" at the amount of waste they found in the reens and woodlands.
He said: "We cleaned the same reen we did only a few months ago and it was filled with rubbish again. We had shopping trolleys, an old mattress, carpets and even a fridge."
But Mr Barry said the local partnership board would continue to clean up the estate on a regular basis, saying: "The hope is if we create a good environment people will learn to appreciate it and keep it like that."
