AN 11-year-old girl was injured by a hit-and-run driver as she left her Newport school.

The year seven student was struck by the car as she left Bettws High School at about 2.10pm on Thursday.

She told Gwent Police a car mounted the pavement as she walked out of the school's exit road, knocking her to the ground.

Police said the girl was left shaken, with a torn muscle in her left calf and bruising around her left eye. She is now recovering at home.

Police are anxious to speak to the driver of a green/blue coloured Rover car, whose number plate included the registration W40.

PC Sophie Whiting, of Bettws police, said the incident was classed as a hit and run because the driver had driven off after the collision.

She appealed for any witnesses to contact Bettws Police on 01633 854847, saying: "We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time."
