A NEWPORT church faces closure unless it is given a funding lifeline.

St Matthew's Church in Maindee needs at least £200,000 to replace all of its flooring, severely damaged by dry rot, and a massive overhaul of its interior.

Reverend David Neale said due to the condition of the flooring, there is a limited time until it is no longer safe for health and safety reasons. Its future now hangs in the balance.

"If we don't get the funding then the church won't be able to stay open," he said.

It is hoped the building, which recently became came into use for the Newport branch of the Credit Union, Want 2 Work and a children's club, could be eligible for a £200,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund.

It has already received money to employ architects to plan the work, but the biggest chunk is not yet in place.

However, its leaders are ploughing on with plans to increase its use as a community resource should they get the go-ahead.

An open day on March 17 at the 100-year-old church will reveal the plans to locals, alongside showcasing the talents of groups who use the church on a weekly basis.

These include Rainbows and Brownies, local school pupils and children from the 7-11 club.

It is hoped if there is enough interest, a new community choir could start up.

"Having a building in use just for church services is not justifiable," explained Rev Neale.

"We are looking forward to meeting members of the Maindee community and hearing their views about what other activity, besides the ones already on offer, they would like to see at St Matthew's."

More than 4,000 invitations have been sent out for the event, including local politicians and Assembly members.

It takes place from 11am to 3.30pm.
