AROUND 300 people attended an annual charity rugby match in memory of a Monmouth soldier killed in action in Afghanistan three years ago.

Family and friends of Rifleman Jamie Gunn were among those to join a minute’s silence at Chippenham Fields in respect of the six British servicemen who lost their lives in Afghanistan last week.

Mr Gunn died, aged 21, alongside two other officers while on duty with 1st Battalion, The Rifles, in the Gereshk District of Helmand Province on February 25, 2009.

Ian Seymour, Monmouth RFC IX team coach and manager praised the support from the crowd as the team played 1st Battalion, The Rifles for the second time.

"The crowd and weather were fantastic and an exciting match led to a win for Monmouth with a final score of 18-10," he said.

The first match took place in February 2011 after Mr Gunn’s family decided to organise a match between his home-town club, Monmouth RFC, and his comrades at 1st Battalion, The Rifles in a bid to raise funds and awareness for the Army Benevolent Fund.

The Soldiers' Charity provides help and financial assistance to soldiers, veterans and their families.

Mr Seymour said the match raised around £1,500 towards the charity.
