A NEWPORT teenager who raped two women, committing one attack while he was on bail for the other, was locked up for 11 years yesterday.

Kevyn Viner, 18, of Caerau Road, who denied the charges, was found guilty of two counts of rape and one of theft.

Newport Crown Court was told the first rape was committed last year when Viner befriended a 50-year-old woman in the street in Maindee. Daniel Williams, prosecuting, said Viner lured her into a derelict garden pretending to show her a short cut to a pub. He then raped her before stealing her handbag.

Viner was arrested the next day and denied the rape. He later changed his story, claiming sex was consensual. Two days later, while on bail, Viner saw a 25-year-old woman outside Newport’s Royal Gwent Hospital.

He lured her into a nearby car park saying he would get them some cannabis, said Mr Williams.

But heforced her to the floor before committing a sexual act on her which amounted to rape. Judge John Rogers QC said: “These are serious sexual offences. You deliberately befriended and deceived both women into a sexual assault.”

Defending, Stephen Jeary said Viner had no previous convictions and that Viner had claimed there had been consensual sex in both cases.

Viner was sentenced to 11 years for each count of rape to be served concurrently.

For the theft, he was sentenced to six months, also concurrent.

He will serve his sentence in a youth offender’s institution until he reaches the age of 21.
