WORK on a new skate park in Newport’s Tredegar Park is due to start soon.

A group of more than 20 young people helped the authority make decisions about the new facility, which will replace The Edge at Newport International Sports Village.

Skateboarders, BMX bikers and scooter riders were able to have a say in the choosing of the design, content and even the company responsible for the contract.

Councillor Mike Hamilton, cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “I understand that the young people involved in the meetings and presentations believe the city will now have a muchimproved skate park.

“This is excellent news and I look forward to the opening of the new facility this summer which, like the previous park, can be used by young people from all over the city.”

The attraction will be built on the former pitch and putt golf course at the southern end of the park near changing rooms, toilets, the children’s play area and car park.

It will be made from a concrete cast and will be similar in size and design to the NISV one and will be suitable for people of all ages and abilities. The skate park, which is expected to draw in 10,000 visitors a year and around 27 skaters a day, will be floodlit, and it is anticipated it will be used from 9am to 10pm daily.

The new skate park is a replacement for the current one at NISV, which will be demolished to make way the FAW’s new National Football Centre.
