THREE men accused of murdering a Newport man fled to London after a co-defendant was arrested, a court heard yesterday.

Kamil Semrau, 28, of Chepstow Road, Pawel Lysonik, 22, of Capel Crescent, both Newport, Lukas Kalkowski, 30, of Laundry Road, Pontypridd, and Stanislaw Gliszczynski, 31, of no fixed adress, are on trial at Cardiff Crown Court charged with murdering Ramunas Raulinautis and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Mr Raulinautis, 34, was found outside the Gateway Express Hotel in Chepstow Road, Newport, on March 9, 2011, after allegedly being beaten and set on fire. He died three days later at Swansea’s Morriston Hospital.

Lysonik, Kalkowski and Gliszczynski are also charged with attempting to murder Stanislaw Galeza and inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, arson with intent to endanger life and arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered.

Gliszczynski’s brother, Andrzej Gliszczynski, 27, of Longtown Grove, Newport, is charged with assisting offenders. They all deny all the charges.

Yesterday jurors were told Semrau was arrested on March 10, 2011, and in the hours following several calls were made between a phone linked to Andrzej Gliszczynski and another linked to Lysonik, Kalkowski and Stanislaw Gliszczynski.

The court was shown CCTV footage of Lysonik, Kalkowski and Stanislaw Gliszczynski by Cardiff bus station on March 12, 2011, making calls to a phone linked to Andrzej Gliszczynski and another number in Leicester from a phone box. The three men then got on a coach to Birmingham, where they were again caught on CCTV.

Police traced calls made by the three men using a mobile to Lysonik’s sister, Anna Lysonik, who told officers her brother asked her to book three seats on a coach from Birmingham to Leicester.

Jury members were shown CCTV of the three men walking around Leicester and making calls to an acquaintance of Kalkowski.

Prosecutor Elwen Evans, QC, said phone records showed the three men went to London, where Kalkowski and Lysonik were arrested on March 20.
