FARMERS in Caerphilly borough are being asked to be vigilant following a spate of burglaries.

Rural properties across the area have been targeted in the past six weeks, so Gwent Police are asking farm owners and smallholders to take some steps to stop themselves falling prey to thieves.

There has been 15 thefts in the borough; ten in Risca, two in Blackwood and three in Bedwas. In the burglaries, eight quad bikes, five mountain bikes, oil and tools were stolen. Officers are asking people to be wary of anyone visiting rural properties under such pretences as collecting scrap metal.

Farm Watch is a scheme which encourages all members to report suspicious activity, as well as any crimes, in a bid to try and tackle the problem.

Farm Watch co-ordinator for Caerphilly Local Policing Unit, CSO Allan Mills said: “After the recent spate of burglaries, we would advise occupiers of similar premises to take sensible precautions, such as ensuring quad bikes are chained to fixings and outbuildings are locked and secured with good quality locks. Good lighting is also a useful deterrent.”
