A CHEPSTOW couple whose son died from leukaemia are joining forces with a cricketing legend to help others with the disease.

Sharon and Kevin Brewer are gearing up to walk alongside Sir Ian Botham on the Taff Trail on April 18.

The event is the seventh stage of Beefy's Great British Walks 2012, during which the former sportsman is walking in ten cities throughout the UK to help beat blood cancer.

The walks support the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research charity, a cause close to the Brewer family's hearts.

In 2008, the couple thought their son Kieran had glandular fever after he became lethargic, lost his appetite and had swollen glands.

After being rushed to hospital, his family were devastated to learn the 14-year-old had acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in September of that year at Cardiff Children’s Hospital.

The teenager underwent a year of treatment and returned to school to study for his GCSEs.

But tragically he relapsed in March 2010 and an urgent bone marrow transplant he needed did not go ahead.

Kieran was just 16 when he died in July 2010 and his family were again left devastated just three months later when Mrs Brewer's mother Margaret Dodson died from Lymphoma.

"Kieran would never see himself as ill, which helped us to cope immensely,” Mrs Brewer said.

“Myself and my husband are doing the walk to do all we can to raise money for research into a cure and also better and more effective relapse treatments.”
