OWNER of Newport's Celtic Manor Resort, Sir Terry Matthews, has regained the top spot in Wales' rich list.

Sir Terry, who made his fortune in computing and telecommunications, topped the Sunday Times Rich List 2012 for people in Wales.

Sir Terry was toppled from the number one spot in 2010 when he was overtaken by Cardiff-born San Francisco-based businessman Michael Moritz.

He also regained his billionaire status last year after his wealth fell from £1.1 billion in 2007 to £950 million in 2008.

It is the first time since 2009 that Matthews has been ranked number one in the Welsh rich list. His fortune has grown by £47m since 2011 and he is now worth £1,090 million and ranks 69th on the rich list across the UK.

Sir Terry, 68, has spent more than £150m and 20 years developing the Celtic Manor on the site of the maternity hospital where he was born.

He made much of his money in Canada where he set up telecommunications company Mitel before selling it to British Telecoms, he later made £600 million in 2000 when he sold Newbridge Networks to Alcatel.

Cwmbran's Hayley Parsons, founder of Go Compare, the online insurance comparison website, has fallen from 18th to 20th in Wales after maintaining her £95 million wealth. She ranks 785th in the UK and Ireland.

Newport’s James Hull, the founder of James Hull Associates, a chain of high street dentists, fell from the 22nd richest person in Wales to the 23rd.

His wealth held firm from last year at £80 million and he ranks 908th across the UK.

The 24 people from Wales who feature among the 1,000 richest people in Britain in The Sunday Times Rich List 2012 are worth a total of £7.055 billion.
