NEWPORT workers helped to raise more than £8,000 for the Royal Gwent Hospital’s special care baby unit.

Jayne Dowding and Michael Woods, who both work at Lloyds Banking Group in Newport, were part of a fundraising project which helped to raise £8,300 through events including raffles, charity football matches and dress-down days.

The pair chose the charity after their respective children were cared for in the unit.

Ms Dowding’s son, Harrison, now five, was cared for in the unit for five days as a newborn after catching an infection.

Mr Wood’s 21-month-old son, Max, was born at 28 weeks weighing just 2lb 12oz and was cared for in the unit for seven weeks until he reached a healthy weight.

Ms Dowding said: “We will always be grateful to the unit.”

The project has also seen staff from Lloyds Banking Group firms in Halifax and Bournemouth contribute to the fundraising programme as part of the project.
