VISITORS to Caldicot Castle this bank holiday weekend will be transported back in time during a series of reenactments of the American Civil War and subsequent wars throughout history.

The Southern Skirmish Association (SoSkAn) will honour the British involvement in the American Civil War at the event this Sunday and Monday.

The performances include battles from medieval times, cowboys and indians, through to the Second World War, and a display of fireengines and military vehicles in the main arena.

There will also be a baseball tournament on Sunday at noon, as part of the celebrations.

The sport has its roots in the American Civil War period.

SoSkAn is the oldest American Civil War re-enactment society outside the United States.

During the past 41 years the group has performed across Britain and Europe, acting out “living history” in a bid to educate and entertain its audiences.

The realistic battle scenes will include infantry skirmishes, ancient day cavalry and artillery from modern warfare.

The participants camp out in the period’s costume and in similar accommodation before each show to prepare for the role.

The society took part in the 2011 British Military Tournament in London.

Entry to this weekend’s event is £5, children under ten go free.
