KNIFE-WIELDING masked burglars hacked £10,000 worth of jewellery from a Newport woman during a break-in at her home.

Two men wearing dark clothes and balaclavas forced their way into Shabnaz Kausar’s house on Pinnell Place in Pill last Thursday, and demanded she hand over the gold bracelets she was wearing.

When she struggled to remove them, one of the men cut them off with a butcher’s knife, cutting her hand, which left her needing five stitches.

Mrs Kausar was in the house with her children Hamza Ali, 16, and Muskan Fatima, three, her nephew Hassain Ali, one, and her grandmother Hakam Bibi, when the attack happened around 5.10pm.

She sent her daughter into the kitchen to get herdummy, but moments later heard her screaming.

She went to see what was wrong and came face to face with the masked intruders.

At first she thought they were her son’s friends playing a joke and she shouted at them for frightening her daughter.

Moments later one attacker was threatening her with a knife and forced her into the living room while the second man went upstairs and threatened her son with a knife and told him to keep quiet.

The man demanded she remove her jewellery. When she couldn’t, he cut them off, injuring her hand, and pulled the earrings out of her ears.

She said: “There was so much blood, my hands were shaking. I was terribly frightened.

I cannot go to sleep and my daughter, who has kidney and heart problems, she was crying. She can’t sleep, she’s saying, ‘Mum they cut your hand’”

“It’s a nightmare for me, it’s like I cannot get over it.”

Mrs Kausar, 36, who was too frightened to be pictured in the Argus, said she is now scared to go out alone and worries her attackers might return.

She is urging anyone with information about the incident to get in touch with police.

She also wants her treasured jewellery, which she says would cost £10,000 for replace, returned.

The items stolen include four gold bracelets, one large gold bangle, earrings and a watch.

Gwent Police are investigating and are asking anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Pinnell Place area of Pill at the time to call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
