PONTYPOOL police carried out an operation tackling vehicle crime last week.

During April, 17 cars were broken into in the Pontypool area, prompting oficers to run an operation last Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

A team of 12 officers, both uniformed and plain-clothed, patrolled problem areas, including Trevethin and Blaenavon, distributing leaflets warning motorists of the dangers of leaving valuable items on display in their cars and leaving vehicles insecure.

During the patrols, 75 vehicles were seen with valuables on display and letters were sent to the registered keepers.

PC Fiona Price, who organised the operation, said: “We want to target criminals, but also raise the awareness of residents so that they can protect themselves against this type of crime. Our message is simple, please hide valuable and lock your doors.”
