MONMOUTHSHIRE police are warning residents to beware bogus callers after a elderly woman was defrauded in Usk.
Police were called to the home of a 91-year-old woman on April 23 after receiving reports that workmen carrying out improvements at her home had filled in cheques on behalf of the woman for amounts exceeding what they were owed. The cheques were later cashed.
Detective Inspector Mark Pope said: “Criminals can call on residents purporting to be tradespeople, then charge extortionate amounts of money for carrying out very little work which is of a poor standard.
“We are urging members of the public to be vigilant and to look out for their neighbours, particularly if they are vulnerable or elderly, and to report anything suspicious to the police.”
Anyone wishing to report an incident should call Gwent Police on 101.
