A GWENT youngster read out his poem to some of Wales' top sporting stars after winning a competition.

Woodlands Community Primary School pupil Jack Skinner was given prizes including a signed Welsh football shirt, tickets to see Wales' football team play and a chance to view a training session of the nation's rugby team, at the Millennium Stadium on April 25, after impressing Show Racism the Red Card judges.

The Year 5 youngster won the poetry section of the competition. More than 6,000 young people from across Wales entered into the various categories.

Participants were asked to create posters, T-shirts, poems, or performances which had a strong anti-racism message.

Year 6 teacher Lynsey Wangiel, who put together the school's entries, said Jack's poem 'Why', showed his maturity about the issue.

She went with the ten-year-old to collect his prize, in front of current and former sporting stars such as Colin Charvis, Nathan Brew and Robert Earnshaw.

Headteacher Jaci Bates praised Jack's efforts: "We are really proud of him," she said.

Charity Show Racism the Red Card is celebrating its sixth year using role models from the sporting world to engage with young people to combat racism.
