WALKERS celebrated the opening of the Wales Coast Path with a special ‘city to sea’ walk on Sunday.

The Wales Coast Path officially opened on Saturday providing a continuous 870-mile route running from the Welsh border in the north to Chepstow in the south.

A link with the Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail means it is now possible to walk the 1,027 miles around Wales.

Celebrations took place across Wales over the weekend, with more than 350 people turning out to walk from Newport’s Transporter Bridge along the coastline thought the wetlands to the east Usk lighthouse yesterday morning.

Plans for the coast path were announced by the Welsh Government in 2006 and since then work has been underway improving accessibility and joining up existing coastal paths.

The path has been developed by the Welsh Government in conjunction with the Countryside Council for Wales, sixteen local authorities and two national parks.
