A WOMAN was given a surprise guard of honour by a group of baseball players at a snap wedding called after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Doctors diagnosed mother of two and grandmother of one Alison Selwood-Jones, 45, of Duffryn, Newport, with stomach cancer that had spread to her blood.
After Mrs Selwood-Jones was told that her cancer is treatable but not curable, with the help of her sister, Jackie Selwood, and family and friends a wedding to her partner of 14 years, Michael “Micky” Jones, 60, was arranged within just two weeks.
“We’ve always said when we’re away on holiday that we’d get married but when we got back home there’s always been another obstacle in the way that we have to deal with,” said Alison.
“But with the illness, it was just something we always wanted to do.”
The wedding was arranged at the Mansion House register office, with 83 guests invited to wish Mrs Selwood-Jones and Mr Jones well, but Mrs Selwood-Jones was left stunned when members of Newport women’s baseball teams gave her a guard of honour, holding up their bats in an arch for the couple to walk through.
The women were from different teams in Newport that Mrs Selwood-Jones, who played baseball with Newport Saracens for 11 years, used to play with and against.
“It was brilliant, absolutely brilliant,” said the Newport Crown Court catering manager.
The couple thanked everyone who made their day special and for their love and support for Alison.
