A 71-year-old politician brought the Welsh Assembly into disrepute after a late-night drinking session with a mystery woman in a five-star hotel funded by the taxpayer turned sour, an official report has said.

Keith Davies, who earns more than £50,000 a year as the AM for Llanelli, apologised for his behaviour after an incident at the St David's Hotel in Cardiff Bay last month.

He had checked in there ahead of a night out on the town to celebrate the birthday of a political lobbyist.

A report today revealed that married Mr Davies returned at 4.45am with a woman, before contacting room service for two bottles of wine.

For three hours, numerous complaints were made by fellow guests about the noise coming from room 408 - with staff subject to "abuse and threats’’ from the Labour politician's companion.

An investigation was launched by the Welsh Assembly's Standards of Conduct Committee.

In a report by the cross-party group, Mr Davies admitted to being deeply ashamed of his actions and regretted the pain he had brought upon his family.

He said: "I acknowledge full responsibility for my actions at the St David's Hotel.

"When I returned I was adversely affected by alcohol and the woman accompanied me for the purpose of further indulging in drink.

"I accept unreservedly this was not conduct expected from a Member of the National Assembly for Wales.’’
