Newport County's fans went from ecstasy to agony at the FA Trophy final in Wembley. But, as they told BEN FRAMPTON, their day still ended with pride, marking the first time the club has played there in its history.

THE result didn't deliver, but the occasion did.

Taking on a team who finished 15 places and 36 points above them in the league was always going to be a big ask for Newport County on the pitch.

But off it, the fans, and by extension, the city, excelled.

Noisy, passionate, good-natured, they were everything the city and club could have wanted.

Even in the aftermath, fans still reflected on the day as a whole, rather than the 90 minutes on the pitch.

Peter McLaughlin, 60, from the Gaer, said: "Newport gave a very good account of themselves, but we couldn't finish today. It's been a fabulous day, I'm just so disappointed for Newport - it would have been great to see them win."

Bryn Hayward, 62, from Pill, said: "It's been a brilliant day, we just didn't take our chances, like all season. I'm proud of the team for getting here."

Richard Williams, 40, from Bettws, said: "They tried their best, I'm so pleased I came - it's been very good, just a shame they didn't win."

Connor Williams, 18, from Cardiff, said: "The atmosphere was fantastic and the fans were great."

Andrew Gripton, 42, from Caldicot, said: "It was a fair result and the occasion was buzzing."

Josh Walsh, 22, from Pill, said: "It was a good day, we could have played a little bit better but the atmosphere of going to Wembley with so many fans and the support from Newport has been good. Overall, it's a great day and the people of Newport have done the team proud, the vast majority stayed right to the end and clapped the team off."

Anna Credgington, 39, from Magor, said: "It's been a fantastic day, even though we lost I'm glad we came."

Dan Credgington, 11, said: "I'm happy we go to the final and I'm proud of the team. It was my first time at Wembley, I'm a bit sad we lost but I've enjoyed it, it's probably been the best experience I've had in my life."

Daniel Moss, 39, from Newport city centre, said: "I've had a lovely day, it would have been better if County won but I'm proud of the team and the players. The people of Newport have been overwhelming in their support, it's incredible."

Dave Randall, 45, from Risca, said: "It was a fantastic occasion, a one-off for the Newport fans - the result was disappointing but I wouldn’t have missed this for the world. The team can take heart and build on this and I'd like to think more people will come and support County."

Chris Thomas, 48, from Pill, said: "It's been a great day, we had a great first half and it's great to see 12 or 13,000 County fans here, let's hope we're back next year in this final and get promoted."

The trophy may belong to York, but the day belonged to Newport.
