IT WAS perfect walking weather on Saturday for the walkers who took part in the Twmbarlwm Trek.

The 500 walkers, who had the option of a 14 or 23 mile walk, could see as far as the Bristol Channel, Cardiff Bay and the Brecon Beacons, as they made their way along Cwmcarn Forest Drive.

The route took them to the Iron Age hill fort of Twmbarlwm and over three of the highest points in the county - Twmbarlwm, Mynydd Machen and Mynydd Islwyn.

There was also the option of a flatter walk along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal which around 70 people completed.

All of the walks started from Cwmcarn High School and its pupils helped out with marshalling.

The pupils had helped Caerphilly council's countryside wardens survey the route beforehand as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award.

Brian Begg, who helped organise the event, said they had a great turnout and that the weather helped with this.

He said the event had been subsidised through a grant from Sport Wales to help get people walking.
