FIRE crews spent a second day at the scene of a large scale fire in the Valleys today.

Firefighters remained at the Glandwr Industrial Estate in Aberbeeg today damping down the remains of the industrial unit, shared by carpet warehouse Abingdon Flooring and Aberbeeg MOT and Service Centre, using water from the River Ebbw.

The cause of the fire is still unknown as South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it could not start its investigations properly while the incident was still ongoing.

The fire, which started at 1am on Tuesday, was tackled by 70 firefighters who spent two hours trying to stop the flames from escalating any further.

St Illtyds Primary School in Llanhilleth was closed because of fumes possibly affecting the school but reopened today.

The Environment Agency Wales and Blaenau Gwent council's environmental health department have been monitoring the situation and nearby residents were advised to keep their doors and windows closed.

A council spokeswoman said: "While there may still be some visible smoke coming off the remnants of the fire, residents may wish to minimise the time they spend outdoors in that area and keep their doors and windows shut."

Shelter was offered again today at Abertillery Sports Centre for anyone considered as vulnerable or with health problems.

Anyone with concerns can call the council on 01495 311556.
