MUSICIANS and dancers from as close to home as Newport and as far afield as Belgium and the Czech Republic are to perform this weekend at the annual Tredegar House Folk Festival.
The event, in its 23rd year, is described as ‘a weekend of international dance, music and song’ and brings in hundreds of performers.
A four-figure crowd is usual too, with a mixture of simultaneous performances planned, both outdoors and in a number of marquees.
Festival committee chairman Susie Oates described last year’s festival as “spectacular”, and this year’s lineup has been assembled to generate a feast of music, movement and colour.
The festival kicks off at 8pm tonight with a Newport Folk Club-sponsored concert featuring Powys-based trio Loxley and Cardiff duo BarlowCree, and a ceilidh with the colourfully named Dr Price’s Fire Band.
Tomorrow is the festival’s main day, with a variety of performances running from 11am until late, and featuring the likes of fiddle workshops, and dance displays taking in styles such as Appalachian, morris, Cornish, belly, clog, and troupes from Britain and Europe.
There is also a concert featuring accordion and guitar player Tim Edey and harmonica virtuoso Brendan Powell.
Sunday features an afternoon concert by acoustic and slide guitar wizard Martin Simpson, and more dance displays.
