NATIONAL reading tests are to be introduced in schools under a new literacy programme launched yesterday.
The Welsh Government’s education minister Leighton Andrews, pictured, is aiming to boost reading and writing standards among Welsh children.
Under the p ro gramme pupils in years two through to nine will be given reading tests to give an accurate picture of how well they are reading.
Under the National Literacy Programme “clear annual expectations” for literacy and numeracy will be set for pupils aged five to 14.
Teachers will also have the chance to undertake further study in teaching literacy.
Mr Andrews said: “Improving levels of literacy and numeracy is a key commitment in our programme for government.
“Nothing is more important than ensuring all of our young people have the skills they need to read, write and communicate.”
